Edu Domain names often end with abbreviations like com, edu, gov, mil, etc. to indicate the type of organization hosting the server. Edu is the abbreviation for an educational organization.

E-mail Electronic mail available through the Internet. You can send and receive messages from anyone on the globe, provided you and he (she) have e-mail addresses. You can also create a list of addresses for bulk mailing. Furthermore, you can attach program, image, and text files to your e-mail messages. The advantages of e-mail are no postage and best of all, it's virtually instantaneous. (Let that sink in.) E-mail is now more popular than ordinary mail, often referred to as snail mail.

Emoticon Derived from emotion and icon, this kind of symbol is used in e-mail, bulletin boards, newsgroups, etc. to convey an emotion. A few examples are
:-) smile
;-) winking
:-( frowning
If you turn your head counterclockwise, the smile symbol looks like a smile, the wink like a wink, and the frown like a frown. Try it.

Ethernet Originally created by Xerox in 1976, this network protocol was later revised by Xerox, Digital Equipment, and Intel. This protocol is widely used with local area networks. Computers are networked through coaxial cables with transfer speeds of 10 MBps, equivalent to slightly more than 1.2 million bytes per second. With Ethernet, data has to be sent in packets no larger than 1.5 Kbytes. For instance, a file of 300 Kbytes would be broken into 200 packets of 1.5 Kbytes each. Ethernet is also a network architecture because it specifies the kind of cables used, their maximum length, how the cables should be connected, etc. Two other network architectures are token ring and Arcnet.

Eudora An e-mail program that lets you read and compose messages off line. It includes other useful features like an inbox, outbox, nicknames instead of e-mail addresses, etc.

Extranet An intranet is an IP network with company web pages for internal use by employees, whereas an extranet is an IP network with company web pages for external use by customers. Some extranets are nothing more than web sites on the Internet that serve customers. But a growing number of extranets are not connected to the Internet. Instead, they use private communication paths called VPNs. Private extranets have the advantage of high speed and better security. For instance, on-line banking is done on extranets.
