LAN An acronym for local area network, typically connecting the computers inside a building or several close buildings. Because the network is geographically small, the transmission lines and protocols can be optimized to produce speeds up to 100 Mbps.

Link At this web site, any underlined word is a link. When you click on a link, the target (where the link takes you) is either a bookmark or another page. A bookmark is a target on the same page, whereas another page means a target with a different URL address. Linking to a bookmark is fast because the web page is already in your computer's RAM. Linking to another page takes longer because you have to wait for the server to download the new page into your computer's RAM.

Listserv A server program that maintains a mailing list of subscribers who receive a common e-mail newsletter, posting, or other message.
