Unix People have love-hate relationships with Unix. It's extremely powerful but confusing. Nevertheless, Unix is the dominant operating system of the Internet. Most servers use it for a number of reasons. To begin with, it runs on a wider variety of hardware than any other operating system. In addition, it has the following advantages: TCP/IP is already built in to its code, it's very popular in universities, and most servers are shipped with Unix as the operating system.

Upload To a transmit a file from a lower level to a higher level, like from your client PC to a server.

URL Uniform Resource Locator. The address that computers use to find any web page on the Internet. The URL is made up of three parts: the protocol, the server, and the path name. For instance, the URL of this glossary page is http://www.malvino.com/glossary.htm. The first part is the protocol "http", the second part is the server "www.malvino.com", and the third part is the path name "glossary.htm". The file glossary.htm is a web page coded in HTML. This file is stored in the root directory. If a web page is in a child web, the path name will include another slash. For instance, http://www.malvino.com/ep_support/index.htm is the URL for the home page of a child web that supports a book called Electronic Principles. The path name in this URL is ep_support/index.htm. This path name tells us that ep_support is the name of the child web or subdirectory of the root web, and index.htm is a web page stored in this child web or subdirectory.

Usenet A network that is equivalent to thousands of bulletin board systems. On the Internet these BBS's are called newsgroups.

User name Also called the user ID, this is your Internet log in name. It's also the part of your e-mail address before the @ sign. Many users select their own user names combining their first initial with their last name. For instance, a typical user name for John Smith is jsmith. The corresponding e-mail address would be jsmith@provider. Sometimes users prefer to remain incognito. For instance, someone might select the user name of wizard, in which case his e-mail address would be wizard@provider.
