The Bell

It was early in the morning when the gypsies kidnapped the young child named Paul. As their caravan pulled away from the remote village, the child could hear the church bells. It was the last sound Paul heard as the caravan raced away from the town.

The gypsies traveled everywhere. The child grew up with them and gradually learned their ways: stealing, lying, and deceiving. When Paul had grown to an adult, he began to question the ways of the gypsies. He was unhappy and unfulfilled. Then, one day he heard a church bell. It reminded him of many years ago when the gypsies had kidnapped him.

Paul decided to go home. But he did not know where to look. And so began a long search as he traveled through Europe looking for his village. Every time he heard a church bell, his hopes were raised. But as he continued to listen, he knew it was not the church bell of his village.

His search continued for years. Sometimes, the bells he heard sounded very close, but they always failed when he listened long and carefully.

When Paul had grown old, he became depressed because he could not find his true home. he was on the verge of giving up. But early one morning, he heard a church bell off in the distance. He walked closer to the sound, and as he did, his heart began to pound. The closer he came, the more convincing the sound. He continued to listen and finally he knew he had found his home. After all the years of searching and listening to bells that were almost genuine, he had at last heard the real bell of his village.

Truth is like a bell. It has a ring that you cannot mistake. No matter how subtle someone's discussion, there is a part of you that can tell if it has the ring of truth.
