Textbook Assignments
Chapter 1: Introduction
  • Read the tutorial on how to download the software for Chap. 1.
  • Download and extract the Launcher, Multiple-choice Test, T-shooter, and Plug-in Module for Chap. 1.
  • Take the Multiple-choice Test.
  • Run the T-shooter program.
Chapter 2: Semiconductors
  • Download the Movies and the Multiple-choice Test.
  • Watch the Movies.
  • Take the Multiple-choice Test
Chapter 3: Diode Theory

  • Watch the Movies.
  • Take the Multiple-choice Test.
  • Run the Up-down Analyzer

Additional Work: Derivations
As discussed in Chap. 1, Definitions are invented and Laws are discovered. Only the Derivations can be proved mathematically. In Chap. 3, the following Derivations were stated without proof:

  • Eq. (3-3). Power dissipation in a diode.
  • Eq. (3-5). Diode voltage for third approximation.
  • Eq. (3-7). Calculating bulk resistance.
  • Click here for the proof of any of the foregoing equations
Chapter 4: Diode Circuits
  • Download the Movies, Multiple-choice Test, T-shooter, and Up-down Analyzer.
  • Watch the Movies.
  • Take the Multiple-choice Test.
  • Run the T-shooter.
  • Run the Up-down Analyzer.
Chapter 5: Special Purpose Diode Circuits
  • Download the Movies, Multiple-choice Test, T-shooter, and Up-down Analyzer.
  • Watch the Movies.
  • Take the Multiple-choice Test.
  • Run the T-shooter.
  • Run the Up-down Analyzer.

Additional Work: Electronics Workbench
If you do not have a copy of Electronics Workbench from Interactive Image Technologies, you should consider buying it. Electronics Workbench (EWB) is a computer program that allows you to build and test circuits on your computer screen instead of a lab bench. Many of the circuits in Electronic Principles, Seventh Edition, were built and tested using EWB. For instance, I built the unbalanced bridge circuit to the left using EWB. Notice that the output voltage of the bridge is 4 V.

The circuit to the left is a simple example. With EWB, you can build all kinds of electronic circuits. The components include resistors, diodes, transistors, ICs, etc. The instruments include meters, signal generators, oscilloscopes, Bode plotters, etc. Using EWB is fast, easy, and convenient. No serious student should be without it. You can download a free demo from their website. After you see how it works, chances are you will want to buy the student version, which sells for $79. If you decide to download the demo, note the following:

  • At their web site, click on the link that says FREE DEMO DOWNLOAD.
  • Then, follow the instructions for downloading and installing.
  • After the EDA demo program group appears, double-click the demo icon to run Electronics Workbench.
  • To go to the EWB web site for your free demo, click here ---> EWB. If you decide to buy EWB, you can get it either from your school bookstore if they carry it, or directly from Interactive Image Technologies at 1-800-263-5552. Ask for the U.S. Student Edition which sells for $79.
